The Day You Stayed
Remembering Finn, from his owner
Remembering Finn
At first, Finn barely crossed the kitchen doorway. Three weeks later, he tried the couch. Then came the camping trips, the lake and the laundry he carried onto the lawn. This bright folk-pop remembrance follows a rescue dog finding his place in the family.
An original example with an imagined story.
You wouldn't cross the kitchen door We left it open wide Put your blanket by the table And let you take your time We sat and talked about the weather Like we hadn't seen you move Till your nose was on my knee And your blanket was no use
Three weeks later, halfway through a film You climbed up, turned around and settled in
That was the day you stayed The day you took your place With your feet across the cushion And a grin across your face When you made yourself at home In every bit of life we made We brought you through the doorway But you chose the day you stayed
But you chose the day you stayed
And the laundry started moving From the basket to the lawn And the neighbour learned your name From the way we called you home You were hopeless in a tent But you loved the open air By the second summer camping You were first into the lake
That was the day you stayed The day you took your place With your feet across the cushion And a grin across your face When you made yourself at home In every bit of life we made We brought you through the doorway But you chose the day you stayed
But you chose the day you stayed
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Twelve years doesn't sound like much Till you try to count the days All the walks before the school run All the Sundays in the rain We were looking through the pictures And we laughed, and then we cried At the dog who hid behind the door Taking half the bed at night
That was the day you stayed And the life that came from there All the muddy, noisy mornings We were lucky we could share Finn, I miss you in the hallway When I come in every day And I love that in those pictures You're right where you want to stay
Feet across the cushion Head beside my knee I remember you like that As comfortable as could be
