The story
Jo and her best friend met working late shifts in a shop. Their Tuesday cinema trips became a habit: the same back row, popcorn passed between them, talking until the credits finished. Years later, Jo took a day off to help her friend move after a breakup. This birthday song remembers both kinds of night.

Think of something you still do together, then add a time they showed up when you needed them. A birthday song can hold a joke and a thank-you without turning into a speech.

You kept your coat across my chair When the bus was running late I'd come in with the rain still on You'd slide the popcorn my way Two shop-floor girls on Tuesday nights With our wages nearly gone You laughed before the funny bit And I knew we'd get along Two seats in the back row One for me and one for Jo Still talking through the credits When they tell us we should go Forty candles on the table All our friends are coming round You can have the biggest slice Just don't make me sing this loud You took a Friday off for me Brought the car and packed my plates Never said you'd seen it coming Never asked why I had stayed We ate chips on the empty floor You drew a face upon the bag By the time the landlord called You had made me laugh again Two seats in the back row One for me and one for Jo Still talking through the credits When they tell us we should go Forty candles on the table All our friends are coming round You can have the biggest slice Just don't make me sing this loud I won't put it in a speech You'd start waving from your chair But every time I needed you You were already halfway there Two seats in the back row One for me and one for Jo I've booked them for next Tuesday For that film you want to see Forty candles on the table Make a wish, we'll wait for you And if we miss the last bus home Well, that's hardly something new Two seats in the back row One for me and one for Jo
